BJJ Classes in Mildura — What to Expect at Mildura Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

By Luke Burnham — Head Coach, Mildura Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (brown belt, Gracie Elite Australia)Published on 21/07/2026

Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time can be nerve-wracking. If you are considering trying BJJ classes in Mildura, you might be wondering what actually happens during a session. Will you be expected to know what you are doing? Will it be too intense? At Mildura Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, we work hard to ensure every beginner feels welcome, safe, and supported from the moment they walk through the door.

What happens in a typical beginner BJJ class?

A typical class starts with a light warm-up, followed by the coach demonstrating a specific technique, and ends with supervised, controlled practice with a partner. You will never be forced into full-contact sparring on your first day.

Arriving and Meeting the Coach

Your experience starts the moment you arrive at our facility in Mildura. We recommend getting to the gym about ten to fifteen minutes before your class is scheduled to begin. This gives you plenty of time to find a park, walk in, and get settled. You will be greeted by one of our team members or coaches, who will show you around, point out where to put your bags and water bottle, and introduce you to some of your training partners. We pride ourselves on being an all-levels family gym. You will see competitors training alongside "lifers" who are just here to get fit and learn self defence. We are also incredibly proud of our strong female membership, which makes up 35% of our students. You will immediately notice that the atmosphere is friendly and cooperative, not intimidating.

The Warm-Up

Once it is time to start, everyone lines up on the mats. The class begins with a structured warm-up designed to get your blood flowing and prepare your joints for the movements of jiu-jitsu. This usually involves light jogging around the mat, followed by specific mobility drills like forward rolls, backward rolls, and "shrimping" (a fundamental hip-escape movement used constantly in grappling). Do not worry if you feel uncoordinated at first—every single person on the mat, including the black belts, started out feeling exactly the same way. The coaches will walk you through the movements step by step.

The Technique Portion

After the warm-up, the class moves into the technique portion. The head coach will gather everyone around to demonstrate the moves of the day. This could be a takedown, a way to escape from a bad position, or a submission hold. The coach will show the technique multiple times from different angles, breaking down the grips, the body positioning, and the leverage required to make it work. They will explain the "why" behind the movement, ensuring you understand the mechanics rather than just memorising steps.

Drilling with a Partner

Next, you will pair up with a training partner to practice—or "drill"—the technique you just learned. If it is your first day, we will pair you with a more experienced student who can guide you safely through the drill. This is a cooperative process. Your partner will offer mild, predictable resistance so you can feel how the technique works in real time. The coaches will walk around the room, making adjustments, answering questions, and ensuring everyone is performing the moves safely and correctly.

What is Rolling and Why Beginners Don't Spar Immediately

The final segment of the class is dedicated to "rolling," which is the jiu-jitsu term for live sparring. For many people, this is the most fun and rewarding part of training. However, if it is your very first class, you will not be thrown into the deep end. We believe in keeping beginners safe. Instead of live rolling on day one, you might do specific, restricted positional sparring (where you only practice escaping one specific position), or you might simply watch the experienced students roll to understand the flow of the sport. As you gain confidence and learn the basic defensive postures, you will gradually be introduced to live rolling at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

What to Wear, Bring, and Hygiene Basics

For your first class, you don't need any special gear. Just wear comfortable workout clothes like a t-shirt and athletic shorts or leggings. Make sure your clothes do not have any zippers, pockets, or hard plastic parts that could scratch the mats or your training partners. Bring a large water bottle to stay hydrated. Hygiene is incredibly important in close-contact martial arts. We ask that all students ensure their fingernails and toenails are trimmed short, their training clothes are freshly washed, and they wear footwear (like thongs or slides) whenever stepping off the mats to go to the bathroom. We train barefoot on the mats to keep everything clean and safe.
