Is BJJ Good for Self Defence?

By Luke Burnham — Head Coach, Mildura Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (brown belt, Gracie Elite Australia)Published on 18/08/2026

When people in Mildura look for martial arts, their primary goal is often learning how to protect themselves and their families. With so many different styles available, it can be hard to know which one is actually effective in a real-world situation. That brings up a very common question for beginners.

Is BJJ good for self defence?

Yes, BJJ is widely considered one of the most effective martial arts for self defence. It teaches you how to control and subdue a larger, stronger opponent using leverage, positioning, and submissions rather than relying on size or striking power.

Why Grappling Matters in Real Situations

To understand why Brazilian Jiu Jitsu works so well, you have to look at how physical confrontations actually happen. Most altercations do not look like a choreographed movie fight where two people stand apart and trade punches. In reality, the vast majority of physical conflicts quickly end up in a close-quarters clinch or on the ground. If you only know how to strike, you are completely out of your depth the moment someone grabs you or tackles you.

Grappling allows you to dictate where the confrontation takes place. If you are taken to the ground, BJJ teaches you how to protect your head, sweep the attacker, and get back to your feet safely. Furthermore, it gives you the ability to control a situation without having to throw a punch. You can neutralise a threat and hold an attacker down safely until help arrives, which is legally and ethically much safer than engaging in a striking match.

The Perfect Mix of Old-School and Modern Sport

At Mildura Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, our identity is built around the perfect mix of old-school self defence and modern grappling. Since our gym was founded in 2016, we have stayed true to the original purpose of the art. Our Gracie lineage via Tiago Ferreira under Gracie Elite Australia ensures that our self defence curriculum is authentic and pressure-tested. We teach you how to close the distance safely against strikes, manage the clinch, and establish dominant control.

However, we also embrace the modern, sporting side of jiu-jitsu. The sporting aspect is what allows you to practice against fully resisting partners during controlled sparring (rolling) without getting hurt. This live resistance is what builds real muscle memory. You learn exactly what works and what doesn't, so if you ever need to use your skills in Mildura, you will react with calm confidence rather than panic.

A Safe Environment for Women's Self Defence

For women, learning how to escape from underneath a larger, heavier opponent is an incredibly empowering skill. BJJ was literally designed for the smaller person to survive and win against a bigger attacker. We understand that walking into a martial arts gym to learn these skills can be intimidating, but we have worked hard to build an all-levels family gym where everyone feels safe. The proof of our welcoming culture is our 35% female membership base, which is exceptionally high for a combat sports gym. Women in Mildura choose to train with us because they know they will be respected, supported, and taught practical skills in a cooperative environment.

Kids and the Anti-Bullying Application

The self defence principles of BJJ apply just as strongly to our kids programs. Bullying is a real concern for parents. If a child is bullied at school, telling them to just punch the bully back often leads to more trouble, suspensions, and escalated violence. BJJ offers a better way. We teach kids how to use leverage to control a bully without throwing a single strike. They learn how to break grips, escape pins, and hold a bully down until a teacher arrives. Because they know they can protect themselves safely, they project a quiet confidence that naturally deters bullies from targeting them in the first place.

What a Beginner Learns in Their First Three Months

If you start training with us, what can you expect to learn in your first three months? Your initial focus will be entirely on survival and escapes. You will learn the fundamental postures to protect yourself while standing. You will learn how to fall safely on concrete without hitting your head. You will spend a lot of time learning how to escape from the bottom when someone is sitting on your chest or pinning your arms. These basic, high-percentage escapes are the foundation of all self defence, and mastering them early gives you a massive boost in confidence.

The Honest Limits: Avoidance and Awareness Come First

While we are incredibly proud of the physical skills we teach, we also believe in being honest about self defence. The absolute best way to win a physical confrontation is to not be there in the first place. Avoidance and situational awareness always come first. We teach our students to keep their heads up, recognise bad situations early, and use their words or their feet to de-escalate or leave. Physical martial arts skills are the absolute last resort when you have no other choice. But if that moment ever comes, you will be glad you put the time in on the mats.
