Muay Thai in Mildura — A Beginner's Guide
If you want to get incredibly fit while learning a highly effective striking art, you should consider trying Muay Thai in Mildura. Known globally as the "Art of Eight Limbs," it is a dynamic and powerful martial art. Whether your goal is fitness, self defence, or eventually stepping into the ring for competition, our program is designed to get you there safely.
Is Muay Thai good for beginners?
Yes, Muay Thai is excellent for beginners because classes can be easily scaled to your fitness and experience level. You will start by learning basic stance, footwork, and strikes on pads and heavy bags before ever doing any contact drills.
Understanding the Art of Eight Limbs
If you are new to martial arts, you might be wondering what makes Muay Thai different from standard boxing or kickboxing. The answer is in the name "Art of Eight Limbs." While traditional boxing only uses the two fists, and kickboxing uses four points of contact (fists and feet), Muay Thai utilises eight. You learn how to strike effectively with your fists, shins, elbows, and knees. It also incorporates a standing wrestling technique called the clinch, where you learn to control your opponent's posture to deliver knee strikes or sweeps. This full-body engagement makes it an incredibly practical striking system and an exhausting, rewarding workout.
What a Beginner Class Actually Looks Like
Many beginners are nervous that they will be thrown into a sparring ring on their first day and get punched in the face. Let us put that fear to rest immediately: beginners do not spar. When you walk into our gym in Mildura for your first class, the focus is entirely on technique and conditioning.
The class starts with a thorough warm-up, often involving skipping ropes and dynamic stretching to get your heart rate up. From there, the coach will break down the fundamentals. You will learn how to stand in a balanced stance, how to move your feet without crossing them, and how to throw a basic jab and cross. The bulk of the class is spent doing pad work. You will pair up with a partner, and one of you will hold thick, padded Thai pads while the other practices striking combinations. Hitting the pads allows you to hit with full power safely, building your cardio and technique simultaneously. The class usually ends with some core conditioning to build the strength needed for kicking and defending.
Learn from an Ex-Professional Fighter
Our striking program is led by Samuel Bacugan, a former professional Muay Thai fighter. Samuel brings a wealth of authentic, ring-tested experience to the mats. However, his coaching approach is incredibly patient and welcoming. He knows exactly what it takes to perform at the highest level, but he also understands how to break complex movements down into simple steps for someone who has never thrown a punch before. Under his guidance, you will learn the correct, traditional techniques right from the start, ensuring you build good habits and avoid injuries.
Classes for Juniors and Adults
We believe that martial arts should be accessible to everyone, which is why we offer dedicated classes for both kids and adults. Our juniors Muay Thai class runs on Mondays at 5:00pm. This class is strictly non-contact. The kids focus on fitness, coordination, and discipline through pad work and bag drills, providing a fantastic outlet for their energy. For the adults, we run classes on Tuesdays at 7:00pm and Wednesdays at 5:00pm. These evening times make it easy for workers in Mildura to come down and relieve the stress of the day by hitting the pads.
Pairing Muay Thai with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Since our gym was founded in 2016, we have built a reputation for high-quality grappling, producing State and National Champions. Many of our members choose to train both BJJ and Muay Thai. The two arts pair together perfectly. Muay Thai gives you elite striking and clinch control on your feet, while BJJ gives you the ability to dominate if the fight goes to the ground. Training both provides a complete, well-rounded self defence skill set.
What to Wear, Pricing, and Booking a Trial
For your first class, you don't need to buy expensive gear. Just wear comfortable athletic clothes, like a t-shirt and shorts. We train barefoot on the mats. If you decide to stick with it, you will eventually want to invest in your own boxing gloves and shin guards, but we have spare gear you can borrow when you are just starting out. Bring a towel and a large water bottle, because you are going to sweat.
Our pricing is completely transparent. Muay Thai is included in our standard memberships, which are $30 per week for adults and $25 per week for kids and teens. With our 5.0 star rating across 25 Google reviews, you can trust that you are getting exceptional value. We also offer family discounts if multiple people from your household want to train.
