What Age Can Kids Start Jiu-Jitsu? Toddler BJJ in Mildura

By Luke Burnham — Head Coach, Mildura Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (brown belt, Gracie Elite Australia)Published on 11/08/2026

Many parents in Mildura ask us when their children should begin learning martial arts. They want to give their kids a head start on coordination, listening skills, and physical fitness. If you are wondering about the right time to introduce your child to the mats, you might be surprised by how early they can begin.

What age can kids start jiu-jitsu?

Children can start jiu-jitsu from age 3 in our specially designed Pup Sharks program. These classes are tailored specifically for toddlers to learn basic movement, coordination, and listening skills in a safe environment.

What a Toddler Class Actually Looks Like

If you have never seen a toddler martial arts class before, you might picture tiny children trying to wrestle each other. The reality is entirely different. At Mildura Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, our Pup Sharks classes are completely non-contact. We do not do any sparring or rough play. Instead, a class is structured minute by minute to keep three to five-year-olds engaged and moving.

The session begins with a fun group warm-up where the children learn to line up and bow onto the mats. From there, we move into animal-based movement drills. The kids learn to bear crawl, crab walk, and hop like frogs. These are not just fun games; they are foundational jiu-jitsu movements disguised as play. Next, we practice falling safely. We teach the children how to tuck their chins and roll backward so that if they trip on the playground, they know how to protect their heads. The class usually finishes with a listening game, like "Simon Says" or a freeze drill, reinforcing their ability to stop and pay attention when a coach speaks.

Developmental Benefits for 3 to 5-Year-Olds

At this age, the physical benefits of training are important, but the developmental benefits are what truly matter. Three and four-year-olds are just beginning to understand how to interact in a group setting. By participating in the Pup Sharks program, they learn how to take turns, share space with other children, and follow instructions from an adult who is not their mum or dad. This builds a tremendous amount of confidence around other kids, which is invaluable when it is time for them to start kindergarten or school in Mildura. The coordination they develop through our movement drills also gives them a massive head start in whatever sports they choose to play in the future.

Meet Ellie McBurnham, Our Dedicated Toddlers Coach

Teaching toddlers requires a very specific set of skills, boundless energy, and a lot of patience. That is why our Pup Sharks program is led by our dedicated toddlers coach, Ellie McBurnham. Ellie is a blue belt who understands exactly how to communicate with young children. She keeps the classes moving at a fast pace so the kids never have time to get bored, and she knows how to gently encourage a shy child who might be nervous about stepping onto the mats for the first time.

Transitioning to the Mako Sharks at Age 5

The Pup Sharks program is designed as a stepping stone. Once a child turns 5, they graduate into our Mako Sharks kids program. Because they have already spent a year or two learning how to move their bodies, fall safely, and listen to the coaches, the transition is seamless. In the Mako Sharks, they begin learning structured jiu-jitsu techniques and controlled grappling, but they do so with a foundation of confidence and coordination that puts them far ahead of the curve.

What Parents Do During the Class

We know that toddlers can sometimes be clingy, especially in a new environment. For the first few classes, parents are welcome to sit right on the edge of the mats to offer reassurance. However, as your child builds confidence, we encourage parents to sit back in our viewing area. You can relax, watch the class, and let our coaches guide your child. Since our gym was founded in 2016, we have built a strong family culture where parents can connect with each other while their kids train safely.

Pricing and Booking the Free Trial
